About
I am Thanos Nioplias (he/him), a New York City-based therapist and the founder of Therapeutic Journey Mental Health Counseling PLLC. I work with adults and adolescents struggling with anxiety and depression, individuals experiencing relationship problems, and those who want to move on from past traumatic experiences.
I am a certified Cognitive-Behavioral therapist with the Academy of Cognitive and Behavioral Therapies (A-CBT) and I have received extensive training in Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) worldwide. Practicing these evidence-based modalities over the past decade made me realize that therapy often lacks creativity, spontaneity, and a somatic processing of emotions. This insight prompted me to pursue further training in experiential therapies including Internal Family Systems Therapy (IFS) and Psychodrama, which I regularly incorporate into my clinical work.
In our work together you will feel less alone and that someone deeply cares and roots for you every step of the way. I will use my experience to determine which therapeutic approaches would benefit you the most. After all, every therapeutic journey is unique: some are brief, aiming to reduce distressing symptoms such as panic attacks, social anxiety, and low mood, whereas others are longer, helping the client achieve a deep understanding of themselves, uncover unhelpful patterns, and heal younger parts (what some call the “inner child”). Whichever your healing journey is, I would love to be your fellow traveler.
Clinical Services
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)
CBT focuses on the relationship between our thoughts, feelings, and behaviors, and it is an evidenced-based treatment for reducing symptoms of anxiety disorders, obsessive-compulsive disorder, and depression. I use CBT in my clinical work to help my clients modify unhelpful beliefs and behaviors using techniques such as exposure therapy, exposure and response prevention (ERP), social skills training, and behavioral activation.
I am a certified clinician with the Academy of Cognitive and Behavioral Therapies.
Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT)
DBT is a skills-focused treatment, which I use to teach my clients concrete life skills in four important areas: mindfulness, distress tolerance, emotion regulation, and interpersonal effectiveness. DBT is an evidence-based treatment for reducing self-injurious behaviors, impulsivity, emotional dysregulation, chronic feelings of emptiness, and relational problems. I have attended several DBT trainings worldwide provided by leaders in the field, I have developed DBT programs for institutions, and I have facilitated DBT groups for adults and adolescents.
Experiential therapies
Experiential therapies include hands-on and immersive experiences such as emotional processing, art, acting, and reflections of events that go beyond traditional “talk therapy.” I have attended trainings in Psychodrama and IFS, and I have witnessed the tremendous healing impact that these approaches have on my clients.
Individual Therapy
Couples & Family Therapy
I am especially passionate and experienced in working with couples and families. I have been trained in Emotion-Focused Therapy (EFT), an evidence-based treatment that helps couples feel more connected and overcome a range of issues, including insecurity, jealousy, and arguing as well as heal from significant relationship ruptures such as infidelity.
Drawing from EFT and other systems approaches, I am a creative family therapist with several success stories of uniting family members and improving their communication.
Training & Supervision
I provide clinical supervision to therapists who want to grow in the fields of CBT and DBT as well as to those who want to improve their skills in working with couples and families. As a certified CBT therapist, I help clinicians learn how to provide exposure, ERP, and behavioral activation treatments to support their clients in making fast progress. I similarly provide supervision to therapists who are interested in incorporating DBT methods into their practice. I also work with therapists who wish to bring more creativity and inspiration into their clinical work.
Over the last decade, I have provided numerous trainings to mental health clinics and university campuses. Some of the topics I regularly teach include CBT for generalized anxiety disorder, Evidence-based treatments for depression, LGBTQIA+ affirmative care, and How to provide clinical supervision, among others.
Last, I help mental health practices design and run DBT programs.
