About
I am Thanos Nioplias (he/him), a New York City-based therapist and the founder of Therapeutic Journey Mental Health Counseling. I work with adults and adolescents struggling with anxiety and depression, individuals experiencing relationship problems, and those who want to move on from past traumatic experiences.
Being a helper is one of the most important parts of my identity and something I practice with presence, passion, and commitment. In addition to my work at Therapeutic Journey, I am a clinical site director and therapist at a big mental health clinic, the Center for Anxiety, and in the past I worked as a therapist on university campuses. I am an advocate for community social justice and my research interests have revolved around the counseling experiences of Black and African American youth. My research has been published in scientific journals and presented at conferences.
I am a certified Cognitive-Behavioral therapist with the Academy of Cognitive and Behavioral Therapies (A-CBT) and I have received extensive training in Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) worldwide. Practicing these evidence-based modalities over the past decade made me realize that therapy often lacks creativity, spontaneity, and a somatic processing of emotions. This insight prompted me to pursue further training in experiential therapies including Internal Family Systems Therapy (IFS) and Psychodrama, which I regularly incorporate into my clinical work.
